Difference between NTPC and NTPC Green
In terms of business, what is the difference between NTPC and NTPC Green? What was the need for the company to start a separate entity called NTPC Green when NTPC was already operational and it already used to deal with alternative renewable power projects (hydro, etc)?
What’s different
NTPC is a large, diversified power generation company. It primarily does thermal, but also hydro, wind, and solar to some extent.
NTPC Green was incorporated in 2022. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC.
NTPC Green acquires projects from NTPC and also directly from the market. They deal in projects related to renewable/ non-conventional energy assets (solar, wind, hybrids).
Why a separate entity
Although NTPC already had renewable projects, it made business sense to isolate the green energy business into a distinct legal entity.
It was done for sharper focus, clearer investment/valuation of the renewables portfolio.
Possibly, it was done to monetise/raise capital (IPO or strategic investment) for those assets.
NTPC is a power-generation giant, while NTPC Green is the “pure clean-energy” arm, created to create focus, simplify asset management, and unlock value in the renewables business.
