In the JRD Tata and the Ratan Tata Era, Tata Sons Chairmanship used to sound more powerful. tata group structure

During the JRD Tata and Ratan Tata era, the Chairman of Tata Sons was seen as the undisputed face of the Tata Group. They had enormous moral authority, long tenure, and deep influence over the group companies.

Ratan Tata, in particular, also had strong influence over the Tata Trusts, which own the majority stake in Tata Sons.

So the role naturally appeared more powerful.

The situation changed after Cyrus Mistry became Chairman. His removal highlighted that ultimate control still rested with the Tata Trusts.

Today, Natarajan Chandrasekaran is a highly respected professional leader, but his role is more institutional and corporate rather than personality-driven like Ratan Tata’s era.

This is where the role of Noel Tata becomes more important.

Noel Tata is now Chairman of the main Tata Trusts.

Tata Trust is the principal owner of Tata Sons.

  • In simple terms, Chandrasekaran runs the Tata businesses and strategy through Tata Sons,
  • Noel Tata represents the ownership and promoter side through the trusts.

Together, they now share responsibilities that earlier seemed concentrated around one personality, which was Ratan Tata.

In today’s Tata Group structure:

  • Noel Tata is more powerful on the ownership and promoter side through the Tata Trusts, while
  • Natarajan Chandrasekaran is more powerful in running the group’s businesses and operations.
